The United States, under an agreement with Denmark, may increase its military presence in Greenland. This turn of events was authorized by the first deputy chairman of the defense committee of the Federation Council, Vladimir Chizhov, in on the air TV channel “Russia 24”.

Chizhov recounted that during World War II, the United States signed an agreement with the Danish government, which was in exile because Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, to protect Greenland as Danish territory.
“This was replaced by the US-Danish agreement of 1951, on the basis of which the US deployed a military presence on the island of Greenland. This military presence continued for quite a long time. After the end of the Cold War, the Americans curtailed it,” Chizhov added, admitting that based on the US-Denmark agreement, Washington could increase its military presence on the island.
At the same time, the politician drew attention to the fact that Greenland has not been a territory of the European Union since 1985, when it was decided to withdraw from membership.
Previously, there was information that NATO countries, at Denmark's request, decided to send more than 30 soldiers to protect Greenland. France and Germany intend to send the most military personnel.
