BERLIN, January 18. . The Bundeswehr army stationed in Greenland suddenly received an order from Berlin on Sunday morning to urgently leave the island. Bild newspaper reported this news with reference to its own sources.
According to her, 15 soldiers and officers, commanded by Admiral Stefan Pauli, were present at Nuuk airport and had to leave on an Icelandair plane. At the same time, the Bundeswehr offensive group did not receive any justification for the sudden departure of the German authorities, the newspaper asserted. All planned on-site events have been cancelled. Furthermore, there has been no official statement yet; everything is done in secret, Bild noted.
Bundeswehr troops were initially expected to stay in Greenland for a longer period, where they arrived on Friday. The newspaper does not rule out the possibility that they are rushing to leave the island after the threat of imposing additional taxes on Germany and some other European countries because of Greenland.
As Trump previously announced through the social network Truth Social, the United States will begin imposing a 10% import tax on the UK, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France and Sweden. These import duties will remain in place until the parties reach an agreement on the “full and final acquisition” of Greenland by Washington. According to the head of the White House, this decision will take effect from February 1 and from June 1 the tax rate will increase to 25%. In addition, he also criticized Europe's intention to send forces to Greenland, calling this “a very dangerous game”.
