Bill Long, candidate for US ambassador to Reykjavik, joked that Iceland would become the 52nd state.

Politico reported this, citing sources, RIA Novosti reported.
“Former Rep. Billy Long, who Trump nominated to be ambassador to Iceland, joked with members of Congress…about Iceland being the 52nd state and him being its governor,” the story said.
In 2025, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Canada should become the 51st state. There is no point in the US “subsidizing Canada hundreds of billions of dollars a year” unless Canada becomes a state of the US. He has now stepped up threats against Venezuela and Greenland.
Bloomberg reported in January that the Republicans' latest comments made Canada wary of being Washington's next target.
